History

A BRIEF HISTORY OF
MOUNT AUBURN UNITED METHODIST CHURCH

The beginnings of the Mt. Auburn United Methodist Church reach back to 1826.  In that year a few Methodists of the community known as the "Pleasant Hill Society" began worshiping at a place called Pleasant Hill.  Their church was a small frame building approximately 24' x 30' which was located about three miles north and one-half mile west of our present location on the banks of Pleasant Run Creek.

In 1835 a new class was formed called the Mt. Auburn Society.  This class met in a house which was the former residence of William Harrell located one-half mile north of the Royal Oak clubhouse.  In 1853 a very crude building was erected immediately south of the Mt. Auburn cemetery located one-half mile north of Stones Crossing on the west side of Highway 135.  During those years Mt. Auburn was part of the Greenwood circuit which included four churches and was served by one minister.

In 1903 it was decided the church would relocate at Stones Crossing on a three-quarter acre plot of ground provided by Harvey Harrell.  This red brick building was built at a cost of $3,035 and dedicated on September 4, 1904 free of debt.

Between 1950 and 1960 the growth of White River Township tripled and the need for a larger building was quite apparent.  In 1966 the church purchased fourteen and one-half acres, and on June 23, 1968 the new building -- a sanctuary/fellowship hall and six classrooms -- was dedicated.  There were major additions to this building added in 1971, 1977 and in 1982.

Then on March 10, 1986 a tornado swept down and destroyed most of our church facilities, but God miraculously spared the lives of 135 little children and our Daycare personnel.  The congregation met at the Center Grove Middle School until the building was reconstructed.  On April 26, 1987 the congregation dedicated our newly refurbished building at a cost of $1,330,000.

On July 15, 2001 the congregation celebrated 175 years of continuous ministry proclaiming grace and truth in the name of Jesus Christ in this community.  Through fire, tornado, and discouragements of every nature the people of Mt. Auburn have always found the courage and strength to hang on and see our way through.  We believe we are now poised on the edge of a growth opportunity never before experienced.  Our faith is in the Rock Christ Jesus, an upon this Rock we will build His Church.
